Please help

Please consider helping by sharing or donating if you can. Josie's grandma needs to be here, with us. She has been through hell in the last two years, in living situations where she is just dumped and dropped off and ignored. You can help make it better.

AMA Friending Frenzy

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if I could have a favor - if you're new to my friends list, could you please comment to this if I haven't added you back? If I got the email while at work, I cannot access LJ through my very old dinosaur blackberry.

This way, I can return the favor and add you to my flist.

Thanks!!

A Decade

I have officially had this LJ for a decade. I signed up in grade 11 when I was in high school. [livejournal.com profile] keoki convinced me to, and while we don't talk anymore, I'm glad she did, because if I hadn't signed up, I would not have met my wife through here. Or the many other friends that I've had the pleasure of meeting. I wouldn't have had the nickname blog borg, either ;)

It's crazy to look back and read the things I've thought, felt, and done. Things that were so important, so scary and so real at the time are now just distant memories. Things that I've all but forgotten about until I go back and read them. I'm glad I've kept this thing up for as long as I have.

Here's to another 10 years of intermittent blogging about nothing spectacular!

The Tattoo Allergy Journey

In my journey with my newest tattoo, I've found very few photos of an allergic response to red ink. The ink used by my artist was Eternal, I'm not sure of the exact shade.

First, this was the tattoo right after she finished it.

Minutes after inking!

Typical redness around it. For those who don't know, that's a model of a serotonin molecule.

A few days later it started to scab, and then about a week later, everything but the red scabs fell off. I noticed more itching at the site of the red ink, but I'd read that red can be the hardest to heal. So, I tried to relax and let it do it's thing.

13 days later, here's a progress picture. Inflammation has clearly developed, and there's no denying that there's a problem.

13 days later

Being stubborn, I thought I'd let it be for a while. I think the night I took this is when the scab on the right came off, and the ink looked quite bright under it. On Wednesday this past week, I finally went to talk to the artist who told me I'm clearly having an allergy, and to apply vitamin E oil to it four times daily. As well, sitz baths could help but if it gets worse, or doesn't start to improve in 2 weeks to see a doctor.

I have no signs of infection other than redness. Usually when a tattoo is infected, it will pus, and be painful. It's a bit tender to touch on the red parts, but I'm confident that it's probably clean inside. That said, I'm not going to wait two more weeks - if it's not improving by Monday, I'll be going into see my doctor.

This morning, in the shower, the last scab came off. Now, the tattoo looks like this:

:(

It looks better now that the scab is gone, but I'm sad that I lost so much colour on the last red dot.

Worst case scenario - the reaction doesn't stop, and I have the red parts cut out by a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon. Best case scenario, the inflammation goes away, and I touch up the black parts, and eventually either try a new red, or have the dots be a different colour.

But yeah. That's what it looks like now. Kinda disappointing.

Frustration

I've been a member of sparkpeople.com for a looooong time. Since 2008 or even sooner. They are usually very good, but I stumbled across something that's frustrating.

sparkpeople.com is a site where a person can log their activities, calories, get information about their lifestyle, etc. It's a good site and has helped me lose weight in the past.

However, perhaps they should start thinking about who they accept advertising money from. I know they run ads so they can offer the product free of charge. But is this appropriate for a website that wants us to change our lifestyle?

Seriously, sparkpeople?

Writer's Block: Cool places

[Error: unknown template qotd]
The favorite town that I've visited is Powell River, BC. I love it because:
- It takes 2 ferry boats to get there
- My friend Anne lives there
- It's small, but it doesn't... feel small. there's no shopping malls, etc, but it has the stuff you need
- It's close to the prettiest place on earth (Texada Island)
- The land is just beautiful
- If you need to go to places like shopping malls, or big hospitals, you get to take ferry boats!
- It's quite isolated so it's not too busy with tourists
- There's mountains, there's beach, there's ocean, camping, swimming, etc. I'm from Saskatchewan. That stuff is awesome to me.
I honestly don't think I would mind living there too much. It might be tough for Josie, medical wise, but then again, that guarantees ferry rides every 3 months for Botox injections. As my degree comes closer to a wrap-up, I'm looking at programs at UBC and UVic. Here's hoping!

Ouch!

Today I learned that I have suffered a stress, or hairline fracture to my 4th metatarsal bone in my left foot.

Huushi - that's why my foot hurt so much when we went for our walk. Because it was broken.

It started hurting on Sunday, but being the stubborn girl I am, I ignored it until Wed. Wed, I walked with Huushi and then I worked. It hurt like you-don't-even-know on Wed. night, and then Thurs (yesterday) the nurse at work looked at my foot, poked it, told me it was probably a stress fracture, and that I shouldn't go in to work today and instead to the doctor. I was limping so badly she sent me home early because it was quiet.

Today I went to urgent care because my doctor couldn't fit me in to his schedule. I sat there for a bit in a room I called X-ray purgatory because it was between the regular urgent care area, and the x-ray clinic. After a while in there, a doctor palpated my foot, and determined it wasn't a soft-tissue injury, and sent me for X-ray. Once it returned she said that it a stress fracture from how it presented and while the X-ray won't show it yet, if it hurts still in two weeks to come back. She prescribed an air-cast and gave me some T3s because it really hurts, and sent me on my way.

The aircast was $160 but my awesome insurance will cover it 100%. I'm very lucky to have good insurance.

Now, off to be social since I"m not at work. Must stay off foot. I'm quite the sight, gimping about with a walking boot, and a cane.

After a While

The social worker put this poem in the book of prayers, etc. that we have at work for when people of different faith need a bit of encouragement, and our spiritual care director is not there. The poem make me think about the different goodbyes that I've had over my life.

After A While Veronica Shoffstall

After a while you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child
And you learn to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn that even sunshine burns
if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure
that you really are strong
and that you really do have worth
And you learn and you learn
with every goodbye you learn...

While it really fits many of the situations at the hospice, it makes me think of the smaller goodbyes that have affected me. Not just deaths, but little things, people who come in my life for a shorter time than I would have liked, and are gone. Goodbyes to things that aren't people. When I stopped being passive and took control of my own happiness.

I like how she wrote how a person has to plant their own garden and decorate their soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. Cut flowers die, but improvements made as a person grows and 'plants their garden' implies, to me, that people should plant bulbs, so the flowers come back every year. I like to think I let Josie help me plant my garden, but ultimately, I'm responsible.

Take a moment to reflect; tell me what this poem means to you? Does it describe anything that you've learned with growing up, or goodbye?

I have been...

A very busy Chandi.

The end of February marked the end of two of my courses, Abnormal Psychology, and Sound and Sense, which was a music course. I did very well on my AP exam, 86%. I'm still waiting for the mark for my term paper. For the music class, I got 83 and 88% on the two papers, and I'm waiting for the exam mark.

After exams, quite literally the day after I submitted the last paper, I ended up super sick. My highest fever was 39.1, and I felt terrible. After a few days I recognized that my sore throat wasn't getting better, so I went to the doctor, and he diagnosed me with strep again. I had strep not long ago, and so I think the stress of the exams/papers being due helped the strep grow back again. I didn't finish my antibiotics last time (I know, bad!) so this time I'm going to be sure to.

I've noticed a pattern, at the end of classes, I'm stupidly stressed. In fact, I'm stressed all the time. I try my best to deal with it, but at this point, I talked with Jos, and decided that I'm in over my head right now. I spoke with my boss, and so we've reduced the number of hours I work in a two-week period on a trial basis. we'll see if it helps, who knows. I can see how it affects our budget, and see how it affects me. I can always pick up through the summer if I want to, others will go on holidays too. Besides, what's the point of working more than I have to while I'm getting my degree?

I did the math, btw, once school is done in April, I'll be 40% done this degree :D

Today Josie and I went to the new mall that's just north of our city. We were on a croc acquiring mission - Josie required a pair for her feet, and because it's spring, it was croc getting time. We walked around, checked out a few stores, and spent some time in guitarworks. I love that store. I got some new picks (I'm always losing them), and I got a hand exerciser. My left hand is still weak from the carpal tunnel surgery/recovery. I can't reliably finger bar chords on my acoustic.

After that, we came across crocs, bought a cute white pair for her, and then went to get lunch. Josie had sushi (ew), and I had this delicious Thai dish. I ordered it spicy, and it actually was spicy! I didn't need to add hot sauce. It was great. The portion was huge, so I packed about half of it to go. I also tried tofu for the first time in it, but I didn't like it. I tried a couple cubes just to make sure. After we had our lunches, we shared a dish of blueberry cheesecake ice cream, and then drove home. Josie read my Health Studies text to me on the way home.

Shortly after we got home, we went for a snooze. I slept for about an hour, and Jos was with me cuddling me. It was awesome. I woke up happy, rested, and warm. Brad and Chris had made a chicken salad with lots of onion in it for supper, and I really enjoyed that on some very fresh cheese-buns. When we finished supper, the 5 of us cleaned up, and now the house is clean because the Dungeons and Dragons group is coming by tomorrow. It'll be fun, we haven't played in a few weeks. My character is after the Cloak of Arachnidia (or something like it) which has the SpiderClimb spell on it, constantly. We have to kill or harm an evil cleric in order to acquire it. We have a plan, I hope it works. The drawback is that my character uses fire in her spells, and although it's a magical item, it can take damage like any other item. I'm relying heavily on the two rogues in the party.

Anyway, today was a wonderful day. Jos and I had fun out and about, and things got accomplished. After we cleaned, I learned the tricky part to "Give a Little Bit" by Supertramp on my guitar, and I found and emailed an article to my prof to ensure it meets requirements for the assignment I have due by the end of this week. I'm sipping at a black russian, and have a delicious buzz, and watching a show on Discovery Health.

Life is good right now. It really is.
